Sweet Baby’s legendary debut album, It’s A Girl, is making its triumphant return in 2025 with an expanded reissue that’s a must-have for pop-punk fans. Originally released in 1989 on Ruby Records, this album became an instant classic, brimming with infectious hooks and timeless energy. The reissue includes rare and unreleased tracks, offering an even deeper dive into the sound that helped define the East Bay punk scene. From the unforgettable anthems “She’s from Salinas” and “Pathetic” to never-before-heard material, this reissue is a celebration of Sweet Baby’s legacy and a chance to introduce their music to a new generation. If you’ve loved their contributions to punk staples like Maximum Rock and Roll’s Turn It Around or The Thing That Ate Floyd, or even discovered them through Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Girl ad in 2005, this reissue is for you. |
A Brief History of Sweet Baby
Sweet Baby (originally Sweet Baby Jesus) was born in 1986 out of Berkeley, California, as part of the iconic 924 Gilman Street scene. Founded by singer Dallas Denery and singer/guitarist Matt Buenrostro, the band’s lineup evolved over time to include Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Knapsack) on bass and Richie Bucher (Jüke, Wynona Ryders) on drums. Notably, the original lineup featured Crispy Jim (The Saddlebacks) and Dr. Frank (The Mr. T Experience), although neither appeared on any Sweet Baby recordings.
Their debut album, It’s A Girl, put Sweet Baby on the map with its melodic, energetic pop-punk sound. Tracks like “She’s from Salinas” and “Pathetic” captured the spirit of the late '80s East Bay punk scene. Over the years, their songs appeared on iconic compilations like Maximum Rock and Roll’s Turn It Around and Lookout Records’ The Thing That Ate Floyd. The album saw a CD re-release in 1995 on Lookout Records and a remastered vinyl edition in 2015 by Eccentric Pop Records, complete with bonus tracks.
Celebrate the Legacy
Sweet Baby’s It’s A Girl expanded reissue brings this East Bay classic back to life, reminding us why the band remains a cornerstone of pop-punk history. Whether you are a lifelong fan or discovering Sweet Baby for the first time, this reissue is your chance to experience the magic. Stay tuned for its release in 2025!
